Excellence in Reproductive Surgery & Fertility Medicine
Dr Stephan Volschenk is a reproductive medicine specialist at PTA Fertility Centre, bringing over 20 years of experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, and assisted reproduction. Known for his surgical expertise and methodical approach to patient care, Dr Volschenk is a valued member of our specialist team.
Education & Training
Dr Volschenk completed his medical degree (MBChB) with distinction, followed by his Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MMed O&G) which he achieved cum laude — with top honours — a testament to his academic excellence and deep understanding of the field.
He subsequently obtained his Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa — FCOG(SA) — confirming his specialist status in women's reproductive health and surgery.
International Surgical Training
Dr Volschenk pursued additional international training in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery at leading centres abroad. This advanced surgical training equips him with the skills to perform complex reproductive procedures through the smallest possible incisions, resulting in faster recovery times, less pain, and better outcomes for patients.
His expertise in minimally invasive techniques is particularly valuable in treating conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, tubal disease, and ovarian cysts — conditions that frequently contribute to infertility.
Clinical Expertise
With more than two decades of clinical experience, Dr Volschenk offers comprehensive fertility care with particular expertise in:
- Advanced laparoscopic surgery — keyhole surgery for endometriosis, fibroids, tubal disease, and ovarian pathology
- Hysteroscopic surgery — minimally invasive treatment of uterine conditions including polyps, septa, and adhesions
- IVF and ICSI — full spectrum of assisted reproductive technologies
- Fertility assessment — comprehensive diagnostic workup for both partners
- Endometriosis management — from medical treatment to advanced surgical excision
- Male factor evaluation — investigation and treatment planning for male infertility
- Recurrent pregnancy loss — investigation and management of repeated miscarriages
Surgical Philosophy
Dr Volschenk believes that surgery should be the least invasive option that achieves the best outcome. His international training in minimally invasive techniques means patients benefit from smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to normal activities. Where possible, he combines diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to reduce the number of interventions a patient requires.
Approach to Patient Care
Dr Volschenk is known for his thorough, evidence-based approach to fertility treatment. He takes time to explain complex medical information in understandable terms, ensures patients are fully informed about their options, and works collaboratively with each couple to develop a treatment plan that aligns with their goals and circumstances.
His calm, reassuring demeanour and attention to detail have earned him the trust of patients from across South Africa and internationally.
